After the excitement of the trip to Nashville for David’s first game (see The Promise) Adam and I came back home just in time to get ready for the next big event.
David was going to play for the Toronto Maple Leafs at the Air Canada Centre on Saturday, October 12, 2013. To those of you who may not be familiar with what that means, Saturday night during hockey season is called “Hockey Night in Canada” and has been a tradition for many decades and a huge milestone in any NHL player’s career.
David, being from Mississauga a city less than an hour from the ACC, had many friends and family in attendance.
As the game went on it was amazing to see David playing in the home of Toronto hockey.
The night got even better though
When you get your first point the Leaf trainer saves the game sheet for you as a souvenir.
The Leafs ended up winning 5 – 4 in Overtime so a great night for everybody!
After the game, we all went down to the area where the players’ wives and girlfriends hang out and wait for the players to come out after getting changed. The highlight was seeing Elisha Cuthbert, wife of Dion Phaneuf and a famous actress. She is much shorter in person!
It was fun to hang around with David and the other players. We all posed for photos and enjoyed the night.
Fast forward to Easter of 2014, the season is over and we are all sitting around the dinner table and I asked David about what happened to his actual game-worn jerseys. Turns out you can buy them from the Leafs or, if you don’t, they put them up for sale in the Real Sports store right outside the arena. David gave me the contact info for the trainer who keeps track of the jerseys and after a little back and forth, he sold me all three that David wore in his 5 games with the Leafs.
They look pretty good framed!
