Family Fun and the Legendary Whiteout – Winnipeg – April 2019

Friday, April 12, 2019

When it looked likely that the Winnipeg Jets would make the playoffs this year we purposely left this rink until the end of the season. Having heard and seen so much about the “Whiteout” that happens during a Jets playoff game we knew we had to experience it first-hand.

The challenge with that idea becomes scheduling. It came right down to the wire to see where the Jets would finish the regular season and therefore if they would start the playoffs at home or away. Basically, we had to wait until the playoff schedule was announced, try to get tickets online and then book flights (hotel was already booked as it was cancelable).

Luckily, it all worked out as the second home game was scheduled for a Friday night and as an added bonus, Adam had a PD Day so didn’t end up missing any school.

We flew in Friday morning and took a cab to our hotel. As we were checking in we saw the flight crew from our AC flight. Turns out we were all at the same hotel…they wished us a “good layover” which we were happy to acknowledge. (still a little confused about that one)

We were starting to understand the dedication that Winnipeg has to their team as we saw “Go Jets Go” in various configurations everywhere we looked.

After unpacking, we went to a great food spot just down the road from the hotel. Adam was pretty excited as Manitoba is another one of the provinces where you can legally have a drink when you are 18.

Not sure what this is but it started with Jack Daniels.

The best part about this stop in the Tate Boys Barn Tour is we were “Coming Home” and got to meet up with some of our Winnipeg relatives.

We were lucky enough to have my Uncle Bob and Uncle John join us in our seats and also hooked up with my cousin Amber and her awesome husband Tim who are Jets season ticket holders. We all met up at the Whiteout pre-game party. Very fun as it was a great spot to get drinks, food and have some fun before the game. Winnipeg knows how to do the Jets!!

Food court on our way to the game…Incredible fan support!!
The MTS Centre…ready to host the big game!

After a great time at the pre-game WhiteOut party we made our way into the MTS Centre to get ready for the start of the game. Our seats were pretty good but it was very obvious that it didn’t matter where you were sitting, the Jets faithful were in charge of the night! Adam and I had been to quite a few rivarly and playoff games but we had never seen anything like this…in the entire time we were at the MTS Centre we only counted 8 St Louis Blues jerseys. Pretty incredible home town support (as seen in the photos below)

It was a good close game but unfortunately the Blues came out victorious with a 4 – 3 victory and also went on to win the series 4 games to 2.

After an awesome lunch with Uncle Bob, we headed to the airport for our trip home. It was a quick trip but well worth it as the “Whiteout” experience was amazing!

Having a pre-flight snack.
