Hands Free Driving, a Cannon and Top Golf – Columbus – March 2019

Adam and I hit the road for the first of our two March Break trips in 2019.

Our first destination was Pittsburgh, one of our favourite cities and not just because it is home to the Penguins but also as it is home to my cousin Jason Lamb and his family. They are great people and awesome hosts so it is always a treat when we can get everyone’s schedules to line up for a visit.

We stopped at the duty-free shop and picked up a couple of sweet deals. It always freaks me out how cheap alcohol is at the duty-free shop compared to buying it in our home province of Ontario.

We arrived safe and sound and got to hang out with the family for the night. always fun!

This was going to be an interesting day as we went to see one of Trevor’s hockey games in Pittsburgh and Jason took us in his new Tesla. It was our first time inside one of the auto-driving cars and it was amazing how well it performed.

After the game, Jason, Trevor, Adam and I hit the road in the Tesla for the drive to Columbus, roughly 3 hours away to catch the Columbus .. After we hit the highway, Jason decided that it would be a good plan for Adam to drive and Jason and I could sit in the back and observe. The car was set to autopilot and it was wild to see Adam sitting in the driver’s seat with no hands on the wheel or feet on the pedals.

Adam at the wheel and Trevor in the co-pilot seat.
Notice we are going 80 miles an hour…well the car is!

The ride was really smooth even when we ran into a rain storm just outside of Columbus and we arrived safe and sound. Jason plugged the car in at a downtown parking lot and we went to a restaurant called The Pearl for some dinner before the game. It was a great meal. Adam had his first ever oysters and I had fried chicken that came with a cinnamon bun…awesome surprise!

After dinner, we headed over the Nationwide Arena and got ready to cheer on the Pens. There were many Pens fans in town and, as both teams were in a tight playoff race, it was sure to be a raucous game!

We had heard that one of the highlights of the arena was a really loud cannon that goes off when Columbus scores a goal. We wanted to hear it but hopefully not too many times!

Unfortunately for the Pens fans the cannon went off 4 times and Pittsburgh only scored once so it was a victory for the home side.

We headed home after the game disappointed in the result but still having had a great time!

We woke up Sunday ready for another game as the Penguins were hosting the Boston Bruins that night. With some spare time in the afternoon we decided to go to Top Golf. It was great that everyone could make so we piled into the truck and headed out to hit some balls.

It was a very fun afternoon with some great shots and spirited competition.

After a few games at Top Golf we headed over to Mary’s office and toured around. It’s a great set-up and so awesome that she is making it work!!

Next it was time to head to the rink. PPG Paints Arena is one of our favourite places to see a game as the crowd is always loud and cheers on the home team.

It was a great game and the Pens won 4 – 2 so that made it even better.

Always a fun time with cousin Jason and his fantastic family! As Adam and I headed home we remarked again about how lucky we are to have such an awesome group of people in our lives.
